You do your work well and you believe that this is sufficient for getting a pay rise and a
promotion. However, this is not sufficient for career advancement. There are a lot of things you
can do to do better and to get noticed. At the same time, there are some fundamental career
mistakes to avoid at all costs if you want to progress in any organization.
Poor time management is a serious career mistake that a lot of professionals
make. You can be hard working and focused, but if you are always late or find it difficult to get
organized, your efforts will be worth much less for your boss. It is not rocket science to learn
how to get organized. There are a lot of great tools for time management as well as special courses
and seminars for professionals. A punctual and well organized employee always makes a good
impression.
Misunderstandings with your boss can bring you only black points. Most people do not like their
boss. This is perfectly natural. However, expressing your feelings and getting into arguments will
certainly reduce your career advancement chances. Moreover, you can get fired. The best thing to do
is to put up with your personal feelings and act professionally. You should never be abrupt. Be
polite and always use suggestions to express your opinion.
Putting your interests before the interests of the company is perfectly natural, but it is not
something you should make obvious. A lot of people do not realize that they are acting as if the
company owes them everything and they owe nothing in return other than just their presence.
There are a lot of things that you can do in order to not become the kind of employee who is
dreaded both by management and his/her co-workers. Avoid complaining about the work environment,
schedule and remuneration in front of others. Do not share how undervalued your work is. Try to
avoid getting vacations during the busiest time of the year. Do not use sick leave unfairly
either.
Going with the flow is one of the worst mistakes you can make. It is true that most jobs today
are demanding and exhausting, but this does not mean that you have to go over your mandatory work
quickly and count the minutes until the end of the work day. Basically, you should never stop being
proactive, speaking up and doing something extra to impress your boss. This will bring the greatest
benefits to you personally.
